Easter may have been and gone, but half term is still under way. With one (or two!) weeks of holiday stretching out ahead, here are our top family days out over the break.
An absolutely great day out for kids and parents alike, Eureka in Halifax is a lot more than just a children’s museum. With seriously interactive exhibits, adults will be hard-pressed not to get involved in everything from learning about the human body to exploring the world through play. With an outdoor playground a cafe, and plenty of room for picnics it’s a top destination whatever the weather.
If the kids are a little older, a trip to Xscape is sure to keep them occupied. Easily accessible right next to the M62 at Castleford, Xscape is probably most famous for its indoor ski-slope. Lessons are available, but if skiing or snowboarding isn’t your thing, there’s also an indoor climbing wall, a skate park, bowling, adventure golf, and a host of restaurants to help you refuel. What’s more, Xscape is next door to Junction 32 shopping mall so if some of the family would rather have some retail therapy, you can do both in one trip.
The National Railway Museum
We’re big fans of the National Railway Museum – it’s free entry, and we think it’s one of the best museums around with loads to see and do. What’s more, from now until the 8th of May the famous Flying Scotsman is in residence, so a visit over Easter is a rare chance to see this locomotive in person.
The Royal Armouries
Another free museum in the middle of Leeds, the Royal Armouries is large enough to spend a day exploring all the galleries and exhibits. Over Easter they’re running a Medieval festival, with falconry displays, archery, storytelling and even a squire school. Some activities require tickets, but all information can be found on their website.
Cannon Hall Farm
An award-winning attraction just 5 miles from Barnsley, Cannon Hall Farm is the perfect destination for animal-lovers big and small. With piglets, lambs, ponies and even llamas, it’s the perfect time of year to see some baby animals, and Easter means lots of extra events from falconry displays to tractor rides and even ferret racing.
