So this year already seems like it’s been a massive whirlwind and it’s only March! As I write this I am on a plane bound for Barcelona where I will be racing the Barcelona Marathon on Sunday as well as catching up with all my Spanish ASICS FrontRunner team mates. This will be my fourth race this year and one I had planned to really have a crack at but due to a few injury scares last month I have had to reassess my targets. Also this race is not my A race….Lake Sonoma 50 next month is my big target for the first half of the year. It’s a race I have always had my eye on, not just because it’s in a beautiful part of the world (San Francisco) but it’s also the last race to qualify for a Western States Golden Ticket.

So, if you have never heard of this race I will forgive you but it’s definitely worth checking out. I would like to say it’s one of the most iconic ultra trail races in the USA….even world. It’s a race I have always wanted to do it but it’s near impossible to get a race number as its restricted to only 350 runners and entry is purely down to a lottery or winning a Golden Ticket at one of the five golden ticket races. Hence Sonoma 50!

The Western States 100 is the world oldest 100 mile trail race. Starting in Squaw Valley, California and ending in Auburn, California and was established in 1974.

Following the historic Western States Trail, runners climb more than 18,000 feet and descend nearly 23,000 feet before reaching the finish line in Auburn.

In the miles between Squaw Valley and Auburn, runners experience the majestic high country beauty of the Emigrant Pass and the Granite Chief Wilderness, the crucible of the canyons of the California gold country, a crossing of the American River.

So the first two male and female athletes at Sonoma win the coveted golden ticket. It’s so Willy Wonka but I love it….

Don’t get me wrong it’s not going to be an easy task, the field is stacked with some of the best ultra trail girls in the world. But the way I see it you have to be in it to win it and just lining up alongside these girls in such a beautiful place will do me fine.

So I guess the burning question is…..what will I be fuelling up on during the race? Well that’s pretty obvious….my must have mini pork pies of course!
